a scary story

i got a text right at lunch from a friend.

it said something to the effect that she was going to get to go home from the hospital tomorrow.

i sent a text back that said, "ummm.............i didn't know you were IN the hospital!"

she sent a text BACK that said that she has been in the hospital since last wednesday for blood clots that went to her lungs and to her pulmonary artery.

it said that the doctors have told her that she is blessed and very fortunate that she survived.

and what caused it?

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS

this is the 2nd case recently that birth control has caused something like this in someone i know. the other lady had a chest x-ray to check for her bronchitis, when they found a spot on her lung. long story short - they traced it all back to her birth control pills and she ended up having a hysterectomy. thank goodness she already had 2 children.

it makes me glad that i am not on birth control pills anymore - don't worry..........we take "other" precautions............especially considering we do not want anymore children!

i understand that these cases are "rare", but still - i don't want to be one who has to face it!

That is VERY scary! I have been taking them for years. I have tried to stop before, but I take them for other reasons besides birth control. Definitely will look into that though. What is this persons age and do they smoke?

My b.c. pills made me have involuntary movements. My arms, legs, head, etc. would just jerk. I had to see a neurologist and have a brain scan and it finally turned out it was my birth control pills! Needless to say, I don't take them any more!

I developed blood clots in my lungs from birth control. I had been on birth control for 8 years with absolutely no problems. My gyn told me that blood clots are now the #1 side effect of birth control. It is scary when you have a blood clot because it can go right to your heart and kill you. I had to go on the shots until I could just take Coumadin. I had to take Coumadin for 6 months. My advice is that if you have been on birth control for awhile take a break from it. Blood clots are scary!

I took birth control for years not so much for birth control, just for the bad cramps I would get. I stopped taking them because I would get BAD headaches. Kyle and I took "other" precautions as well. Anyway, I had to have surgery a couple of years ago and everything is fixed now..... This is scary though, I can't say I know anyone on BC's anymore, all my friends are getting to old for having babies now... I am telling my age now.

That is scary. I don't take them bc of personal belief...but that makes me even more glad that we use "other" precautions now!

I also developed blood clots from birth control. The first symptom I had was that I felt like my throat was closing up. I had just had surgery, and everyone told me it was because of the tube they put down your throat for sedation during the surgery. Well, it never went away, and then my chest felt constricted. I was out of breath in just talking. Sure enough when we went to the internist I had several blood clots in my lung. That was one of the scariest feelings. My suggestion is if you are going to use BC get on a low dosage like "Yaz" or "Ortho-tri-cylcen Lo." Good Blog Topic!

Do you know what kind of BC they were using? I've been taking the patch for a couple of years now and people are always trying to scare me about it. My OB said that it was fine, not any worse than any other BC, as far as blood clots go but he did warm me that two of his patients got pregnant on it. Oh well on the pregnancy part if it's in His will!

I was on Ortho-tri-cyclen the regular one. It has 35% proestrogen whereas the Ortho-tri-cyclen low is 25%. I tried the low ones like "Yaz" which caused me to break out and have abdominal pain. Micronor doesn't have any proestrogen, but it made me gain weight. They give that to women who are breast feeding. The patch has been known to cause blood clots.
Including me I know three people now that have gotten blood clots from birth control pills. Just be careful and talk to your ob/gyn about the pill you are on. Okay, that sounded like an after school special!

I am off pills for physical and ethical reasons....I will not go into it all here, but I feel so much better knowing that I'm not putting that into my body!
