before i start decorating....

i've got 8 cakes sitting in the kitchen waiting to be decorated. yes - you read that right - EIGHT. 2 of them are "dig in" cakes. the other 6 are regular cakes!

anyway, before i start decorating i wanted to share something with you.....all 8 who may actually still read since i never update!

mary peyton and i went to lunch with tommy today. we don't get to do it often, but we were in town around his lunch hour, so we went!

he chose king buffet - not necessarily my favorite, but whatever.

while we were in there, we overheard a man stop an older man and talk to him. they obviously knew each other and were reminiscing. another man came back with his plate and also began to talk to the older man - the older man knew this man's brother.

when the first man (the one who stopped the older man) went to check out, he came back in and grabbed the waiter. he asked how much the older man's meal was going to cost and layed down the money for it.

a couple at another table commented something to the effect that he could pay for their's, too!

the man said: "i'm sorry. you see, this man was my teacher - my coach. and if he had not put it there (pointing to his rear end - as though he had been disciplined), i would not be where i am today. i am able to preach, i have a job, i have a home, and i have a family. and this meal isn't to thank him. it's to say i love you."

as i sat there with my eyes starting to tear up, i overheard more.

the teacher/coach: "you're preaching!?!?! man, i am so proud of you - you just don't know".

after that, they said something about trying to plan a reunion with classmates and teachers. i hope they are able to do it.

you know, i had some incredible teachers in my life. some of them know how much i appreciate them, but others may not. when i was pregnant, i ran into nell o'neal - my 1st grade teacher - in the mall. she was never married and even when i had her, she reminded me of my grandmother. we sat and talked about what i was like. she is one of those teachers who touched my life and made such an impact on me.

who were your "favorites"? do you think they know how much you appreciate them? i am making it a point to sit down SOON and write a few letters.

and i'm challenging you to do the same!

I know mine...it's why I am a teacher! Mrs. Andrus....my second grade teacher at Cherry Street Academy. She was old then ... she loved old music and taught us lots of songs, poems, and at the end of the day she had alot of wild gray hair from 20 children driving her crazy!ha!

My favorite teacher passed away this week. I got to talk to her twice in recent weeks, to tell her I loved her and thank you. It's a long story, but she was a safe haven for me in the 6th grade when I was the new kid and didn't fit in and dreaded going to school. She encouraged me and nurtured me. Over the years she became my friend. I went to high school with her son. Our senior year, he was killed in a car accident. His older brother lived in Texas, and Linda was a single mom. I decided the best way I could honor my fried was to take care of his mom. I became a surrogate daughter to her. We were very close until I moved to Mississippi. Over the years, we communicated less often. But when she knew she didn't have long, she asked someone to get in touch with me so we could talk again. I thank God for those talks.
